Biological Treatment

With the many water treatment processes available on today’s market, choosing the best method for your investment can become a demanding task. Fortunately, the MBBR water treatment process is available as a reliable option for your wastewater treatment project.

The MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) process improves reliability, simplifies operation and process management, and requires less space compared with traditional wastewater treatment plants. The technology behind the MBBR process is well controlled, making these advantages possible. MBBR systems use sludge aeration, where the sludge becomes activated and collects on recycled plastic carriers. These carriers, known as K1 media, provide a large surface area for contact between air, bacteria, and water. The activated sludge, which consists of microorganisms, is located on the inner surface of the carriers.

Industrial wastewater is treated in treatment basins. In this way, bacteria break down organic matter from the wastewater. A sensitive factor in the MBBR process is ensuring adequate and frequent contact between the microorganisms attached to the carriers and the biofilm components in the wastewater.

MBBR is a highly efficient biological treatment process. In addition, the treatment process can be both anaerobic and aerobic, and it operates under high load conditions.

Some of the advantages of MBBR technology include:

  • Increased capacity
  • No need for periodic backwashing
  • Increased sludge protection and no sludge bulking problems
  • Compact, small-sized units
  • Improved settling characteristics
  • Operation with higher suspended biomass
  • Improved process stability
